• Microsoft Most Valuable Professional Award [MVP]

I was truly honoured to receive an email on Saturday telling me that I had been awarded the Microsoft Most Valuable Professional Award in Enterprise Mobility.

It’s something I didn’t set out to achieve when I started the SCCMentor blog four years ago, but over that time I have helped in the community, become involved in a cool usergroup (WMUG), done some public speaking, got to know fellow ConfigMgr experts…

  • Changes to Power BI Free are coming on 1 June 2017.

There's been a lot of interest in the Power BI dashboard and ConfigMgr template since I published a blog post about it on the SCCMentor website back in March.  A presentation I ran at the last WMUG event generated even more discussion about the tool.

One of the great features of the product is the ability to share out your dashboards to your Office 365 users with the click of a few buttons and you only needed access…

  • Book review: Microsoft System Center Endpoint Protection Cookbook – Second Edition

I've started a new series of posts on the SCCMentor website to review some of the best ConfigMgr books that are out on the market. I thought it would be worth presenting these reviews on the WMUG website.

In the first of the series I take a look at the second edition of the Microsoft System Center Endpoint Protection Cookbook. The book is authored by MVP Nicolai Henriksen, a ConfigMgr and , back in the day, S…

  • Run Citrix Receiver on a Raspberry Pi 2 or 3

The Raspberry Pi 2 and 3 are running with enough power to act as a 'thin client' device to connect to a Citrix environment via a specific release of the Citrix Receiver. This blog post takes you through the basic steps to get you installed and connected.

    Install Raspbian

You can download the Raspbian O/S from the official Raspberry Pi web site https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/. If you are new to this I recommend…

  • Slow Start Menu and unresponsive Search in Windows 10 - VMWare

I thought it would be worth popping this into a blog post as I spent many hours recently troubleshooting problems with the Windows 10 Start Menu and Search bar in a Citrix PVS environment.

In some instances the Start Menu was slow to load up or other instances wouldn't load at all, occasionally prompting for the explorer.exe process to be killed.

The root cause behind this problem turned out to be VMWare Tools.

  • Running Ubuntu and Bash on Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Windows 10 Anniversary Update allows you to run Ubuntu and the Bash shell. This is an optional feature and is switched on via Windows features.

Once enabled you'll need to restart your device. You'll then be able to search for bash.

and you'll be prompted to install Ubuntu.

This process, will take a few minutes to connect to the Windows Store, download, extract the filesystem.

    Once completed you'll be prompted…

  • Windows 10 IoT Core - Raspberry Pi connections without a network

Myself and Peter Egerton ran an 'Introduction to Windows 10 IoT on the Raspberry Pi' session recently at a WMUG event and we had some issues connecting remotely into the Raspberry Pi on the network we were presenting from. Not all was in vain as we were able to run our Blinky tutorial, albeit a cut down version, direct from the IoT tutorials on the SD Card.

So I thought I would run through the steps to get the…

  • Failed to restore virtual machine state

I thought I would blog this since, for a moment, I thought I'd lost my DC and ConfigMgr server in my lab (Backups?? Sorry??)

Basically when attempting to start up my VM's from a saved state I received the following error message:

'failed to restore virtual machine state'

A quick check of the environment and it looked like the VM's were attempting to launch on an old virtual switch that no longer existed…

  • Installing Windows 10 IoT Core on a Raspberry Pi 2

A few months ago I wrote a three-part series on how to get started with Windows 10 IoT on the Raspberry Pi.

The process to get the Windows 10 IoT Core image onto the SC card has changed slightly since then so here are the details on how to achieve a build as of the end of July 2015.

    Download the Install

Download the IOT Core RPi.ISO from the Microsoft Download Center here

Once downloaded extract the ISO. You will be left…

  • Recover disk space after Windows 10 upgrade

Once things have settled in with your Windows 10 install you might want to recover the space used by the Windows10.old folder.

To do this deleting previous Windows installations has now been incorporated into the Disk Cleanup Utility.

After launching Disk Cleanup click the 'Clean up system files' button.

You can now select to remove the previous install along with temporary install files and log files. In this…

  • ConfigMgr Store puts all your ConfigMgr apps in one place

Before I post about this marvellous new application created by fellow WMUG friend Robert Marshall, let me just say that this is the last duplicated post from the SCCMentor web site. All future WMUG posts will be unique and focused on Windows 10 related topics. So do keep an eye on the SCCMentor web site for all ConfigMgr related material. Caveat - sometimes there will be a cross over!

What started as an idea on an email…

  • Quickly disable Windows Defender on Windows 10 using PowerShell

Here's a couple of commands that come in handy if you need to temporarily disable real time monitoring of Windows Defender on the Windows 10 Technical Preview release.

At present my Defender is happily monitoring with real-time protection switched on.

Fire up a PowerShell window as administrator and run the following command:

    Set-MpPreference -DisableRealtimeMonitoring $true

    You'll soon get a Windows notification…

  • Remove partition as part of Windows 10 in-place upgrade with PowerShell

The Windows 10 in-place upgrade ConfigMgr Task Sequence is going to make the migration to Windows 10 relatively pain free and quick. You can have an upgraded O/S running the latest release within the space of an hour. With support for upgrade for Windows 7 & 8 it makes sense to invest time and effort into this method for rolling out the soon to be released O/S.

The in-place upgrade Task Sequence, by default, will…

On January 21st, Microsoft unveiled the new default browser for Windows 10 entitled, for now, Project Spartan. Spartan has been developed for 'the modern Web', effectively kicking Internet Explorer in touch and converting it into a legacy browser that will help to support web sites that may have compatibility issues running in Spartan.

Fear not IE fans - this browser will continue to be supported alongside Spartan…

Windows Image and Configuration Designer, or WICD, is a new, exciting tool that will further enhance the customisation of the Windows platform alongside tools such as ConfigMgr and MDT. Do not think of WICD as a deployment tool.

'Windows ICD is primarily designed for use by:

    • OEMs, ODMs, and Makers looking for a simple and streamlined process of creating and deploying a Windows image…

  • Live Blog - Windows 10 build 9926 to build 10041 upgrade

Yesterday I ran the in-place update from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 build 9926.  Everything went smoothly.  Job done.

Build 10041 is out and people have had some issues upgrading - rollback or erroring.

I decided it would be fun to run a live blog. Updating along the way. Isn't it about time we saw a blog with the errors highlighted? Well here it is.

I'm going to run an in-place upgrade from ConfigMgr 2012. At this stage…
