  • Reporting Services broken post SCCM 2012 R2 upgrade

Nothing like trying to get a report out for your customer only to find your recent upgrade to R2 has broken all the reports! Time to investigate.

Reports were giving out the following error or similar when accessed:

'An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted)
Cannot read the next data row for the dataset Parameter_DataSet_Baseline. (rsErrorReadingNextDataRow)

  • Hotfix Package 4 for Microsoft Application Virtualization 5.0 SP2 released

Microsoft has released Hotfix Package 4 for App-V 5.0SP2. This release is almost like a whole service pack with the amount of fixes that it incorporates. If you are going to upgrade then test your applications prior to pushing out to users.

Of interest to readers of the SCCMentor blog is the fix for the following issue 'Unable to unpublish App-V 5 packages with AppData redirected' raised back in October last year…

  • Grub error after Ubuntu 14.04 upgrade

'Wait a minute' I can hear you saying, 'this is the Windows Management User Group site. What's an Ubuntu upgrade got to do with me?'

Well if you're dual booting Windows and Ubuntu then this is worth checking out as the upgrade to the latest Ubuntu desktop 14.04 (Trusty Tahr) kills your grub and you can't boot to either Ubuntu or your trusty Windows 7/8 install!

Well it's not too much of an…

  • SCCM 2012 SP1 (CU1) to R2 (CU1) in-place upgrade

SCCM 2012 R2 was released back in November and with CU1 released recently - adding App-V 5.0 SP2 support alongside other improvements - then it's time for an in-place upgrade.

Note that I am undertaking an upgrade to CU1 level, this addresses issues to do with OSD/PXE. Unfortunately in my test environment I don't have this functionality available to me so ensure things have run smoothly in the OSD workspace. I'll…

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 Cumulative Update 6 fails to install

Whilst attempting to update my SQL Server 2k8 R2 SP1 install to CU6 the update would fail to install and the SQL Reporting Services service also failed to start with the following error:

'The SQL Server Reporting Services (MSSQLSERVER) service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.'

To fix the problem I had to create the following…

  • Dealing with Bad Mif files in a VDI environment

Whilst doing some housekeeping for a client recentlyI discovered that the SCCM inboxes were littered with bad mif files. Hmmm time to do some investigative work.

Bad MIF files occur in the following situations:

    • MIF file size is too large, as I know in SMS it is limited up to 5,000,000 bytes
    • If a NOIDMIF or an IDMIF can not be parsed successfully because syntax errors meaning simply that it is not formatted correctly…

  • Unable to unpublish App-V 5 packages with AppData redirected - Update 3 - The Final Update!

I've been championing this issue for a while on the blog and reported it way back in October last year. The fact that App-V 5.0 can't unpublish packages successfully when the AppData\Roaming is redirected to the network

This is not an issue that's isolated to SCCM, the problem can be replicated when running the unpublish command in PowerShell.

App-V 5.0 SP2 introduced folder redirection support but still the…

  • Implementing SCCM in a XenDesktop MCS VDI environment

I've spent the last year implementing SCCM in numerous XenDesktop environments. These have all been MCS (Master Creation Services) deployments running under XenDesktop 5.6. SCCM 2012 handles it very well and I thought I'd share some my experiences and setup for anyone jumping into this as a first-timer.

Allow the Master Image workstation to have the SCCM client installed

Under a VDI solution only the master…

  • Publishing an App-V package outside of SCCM

You might want to deploy your App-V package outside of SCCM to test prior to the big push. Let's face it it's always wise to test your MSI deployment prior to creating a SCCM application so why not test your virtual app as well.

It's very simple to do this with two commands. First copy down your App-V files from the sequencer to your testing machine.

Run PowerShell as an administrator and change directory to…

  • Unable to unpublish App-V 5 packages with AppData redirected - Update 2

Back in October I posted about SCCM's inability to unpublish App-V 5 packages successfully with the AppData>Roaming folder redirected to a network share.

I updated with a new post in November which gave a few tips on how to get around the problem with a quick but dirty fix. I also tested out SP2 beta which, although officially supported folder redirection, still did not unpublish the package.

    The great news is that…

  • Implementing AppLocker with App-V 5 Packages

AppLocker is Microsoft's latest release of Software Restriction Policies.  It requires Server 2008 R2 Active Directory policies to enable and configure and allows you to configure white and black lists to allow/disallow executables, installers and scripts.

In my SCCM 2012 environment I have configured App-V 5 packages to be deployed to User Collections that are populated via a query. The query is simply, 'is the user…

  • Reporting Services Point - Server Instance Blank

I've helped with this issue a couple of times now so thought it would be ideal to blog.

Basically when running a remote SQL instance and adding in the Reporting Services Point the Reporting Services server instance is empty.

To resolve the problem ensure that the Reporting Services site role is installed on the SQL server and not the SCCM server.

In Administration workspace choose Site Configuration>Servers and Site…

You may find yourself in  a position where you've got to document the SCCM solution that you've just deployed. MVP, and PowerShell guru, David O'Brien has taken away the pain of the labourious hours that would be normally spent doing this and popped it all into a PowerShell script that takes minutes to run.....just don't tell your boss!

  • Machine loses trust with the domain

Not really an issue for SCCM but quite a cool bit of PowerShell.

You know when the machine loses trust with the domain and you end up taking it out of the domain and re-adding.

Don’t bother. Just log in as admin, run PowerShell as admin and then type this

    Reset-ComputerMachinePassword –server <DC hostname> -Credential <domain\username>

This resets the machine password in AD and all is good.

  • Changing computer name after installing SQL Server

Not only had I managed to use a reserved site code name in my R2 build recently but I'd also named my server incorrectly - 'ConfigMrg1' yeah right!

So since I needed to reinstall R2 to I thought I would change the server name.

SQL didn't need a re-install so I needed to run some commands in SQL to reflect the change in hostname.

To do this fire up SQL Server Management Studio and connect to the new hostname…
